Kairos Torch Prison Ministry

Thank you to everyone that supported Dennis Morgan and me this past weekend on the Fox Valley Kairos Torch Prison Ministry Weekend.  With your prayers and contributions you were part of this powerful weekend where we sat alongside 18 incarcerated youth at the Illinois Youth Center.  Yes! that prison that you see on the north side of Route 38.

Adult mentors from churches around the Fox Valley, Pentecostals, Roman Catholics, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Episcopalians, Congregationalists, Methodists, and Baptists joined together to serve the youth on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with a mission to engage the youths’ reasoning skills to help them make better life choices going forward.

kairos torch prison ministryThis was an opportunity for us to follow the example of St. Ignatius who said that we can “See Jesus in the lowly places”.  The Illinois Youth Center is absolutely the place where Jesus would be today.

When you stand with these youth you create kinship with them, and once you do that it is impossible to despise or discard them … you can only love them.  They are beautiful individuals who are God’s creation … just like you and me.

There are few moments in my life that I have ever felt closer to God than I did this past weekend.

Kairos Torch Ongoing Mentoring

Under the guidance of Kairos Torch, both Dennis and I are committed to providing  ongoing mentoring to the some of these youthful offenders with weekly visits until they are released.

Pat Dever

It is with great sadness that we let our Rejoice family know about the loss of one of our precious members.

We have just learned that Pat Dever collapsed at work this morning and was rushed to the hospital, but despite their efforts they were unable to revive her.

Pat was special to so many of us. She served on many ministries here at Rejoice, and we have been blessed by her leadership, her wisdom and her faithful discipleship. Many were also very close to Pat personally, and this will be heartbreaking news to learn. We have lost an exceptional friend and leader in this congregation.

We will update you as soon as we learn when and where the visitation and funeral will be held. In the meantime, please keep Pat’s family in your prayers as they mourn their sudden loss.

Big Bottomless Bowl Bash

Enjoy Gumbo at Grahams 318

gumboRejoice Lutheran Church will be holding a Big Bottomless Bowl Bash fundraiser at Grahams 318 Coffee House on Thursday, September 5th 2013 at 7pm.  Musical entertainment will be provided by Grahams resident favorite, Patrick James.

Church members will serve different gumbos inspired by the delicious Creole cuisine of the Mississippi region and beyond.

All funds raised will be used to bring relief to the homeless of the Gulf Coast regions surrounding Biloxi, Mississippi and Slidell, Louisiana which are still recovering from a series of natural disasters that have occurred in recent years.

Rejoice Pastor Lou Quetel said, “I want to invite you join in a great opportunity to serve fellow Americans who need help!  While the Gulf area has recovered from Katrina the needs of poor folks are great.  Basic shelter and food security are real issues for a lot of families. Rejoice has been serving in this area for four years now and this has become an important part of our ministry.  It is one way we try to show up with love in Christ’s name”.

“Join us for a great bowl of Cajun culinary mojo and great music by Patrick James.  You will be well fed, hear fabulous grooves played by a master and you will help to make a difference in the lives of poor folks in the Gulf Coast.  Please come out and partner with us in this opportunity to serve.  God bless you and thank you”.

In October, members of Rejoice Lutheran Church will return to the Gulf Coast for the fifth time and serve with Habitat for Humanity and the Loaves and Fishes Feeding Ministry.
